Facing an Unplanned Pregnancy

April 20, 2022

You just took a pregnancy test and it’s positive, NOW WHAT?!

Understandably, you have a ton of emotions with a lot of questions going through your mind and it can be very overwhelming. How you will tell others in your life and what they may say. You may even feel like you failed many important people in your life, like family, boyfriend, even yourself! You may feel LOST – SHOCKED – OVERWHELMED – CONFUSED and don’t know what to do.

Take a deep breath and let’s walk through what you should do next.

STEP 1: CONFIRM YOUR PREGNANCY WITH A DOCTOR!

Scheduling with your doctor as soon as possible is best, rather your pregnancy is planned or unplanned. Your doctor can answer many questions for you and early prenatal care is best for you and your baby. Here are just a few things your doctor can help you with:

  • Confirm your pregnancy
  • Determine how far along you are. Based upon that information, your doctor will help you determine what your next steps will be in your prenatal care.
  • Give you resources to help have the healthiest pregnancy possible

Your doctor will answer questions you have about pregnancy, childbirth and assist with additional resources you may need during your pregnancy and play an important role in this time in your life.

If you need help in locating a doctor or clinic in your area for access to prenatal care, give ABBA Adoption a call and we can assist you. 501-776-2566 or email.

STEP 2: WORK THROUGH YOUR EMOTIONS

As stated above, many emotions can flood your mind when you learn that you are pregnant. It’s important to work through those feelings and understand that many things you are feeling are not uncommon. Just as important, you need to allow yourself to work through them.

Obviously, the emotions you go through will be determined by what your thoughts are on being pregnant. However, that is not always as easy as it may seem. For instance, you may feel overwhelmed, shocked and at a loss of what to do, but be excited about the gift of life. Another example is you may feel indifferent and not connected to your pregnancy. Every woman goes through this differently, and there is no wrong or right way to feel.

Here are just a few of some emotions that are very common when finding out you have an unplanned pregnancy:

  • Shock
  • Anger
  • Overwhelmed
  • Confused
  • Depression

I am a huge advocate of keeping a journal. This is a great time to journal your feelings and thoughts daily as you are working through this process. It allows you to really work through those emotions. You can go back and visit what you journal and see what has changed, what feelings seem to be staying with you and which ones have subsided.

Our Support Coordinators are always available to help you work through your emotions. All you have to do is call us: 501-776-2566 or email.

STEP 3: LEARN YOUR OPTIONS

You will have many people that will give you their opinion about what you should do and how you should do it. But ultimately, the decision is yours! You can make the right choice for you and your baby. In order to do that, it is important to be informed of your different options. And know…..YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FACE IT ALONE!

ABBA Adoption is a great place to start as we have Support Coordinators who you can speak with that will give you the tools needed to help you make an informed decision. WE ARE NOT HERE TO TELL YOU WHAT CHOICE TO MAKE! We give you the tools, guidance, support and resources so that you can feel good about whatever decision you make for you and your baby.

Because every woman’s circumstance is unique regarding unplanned pregnancy, it is important to talk with a professional team that can give you the best quality of care, resources and assistance tailored to your specific needs.

STEP 4: FRAMEWORK FOR YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM

Building your support system for your unplanned pregnancy is vital! Who you share that information with is completely up to you. Many women, when facing an unplanned pregnancy, will wait until they’ve made a decision about their plan for their pregnancy going forward before they share that they are even pregnant, and that is completely understandable as you want to have clarity and all your questions explored and answered. Telling your family and those most important in your life can be a bit intimidating and overwhelming.

Keep in mind that if you choose to keep your unplanned pregnancy a secret, you can lose out on indispensable support from those closest to you. ONLY YOU know if the people in your life will be a good support or not. If those people are safe and love you, they can provide tremendous support at this time in your life.

ABBA Adoption’s Support Coordinators walk every step of the way with you. They can help you think through the important people in your life and give you resources to help have these important conversations.

STEP 5: CONTACT YOUR ADOPTION SUPPORT COORDINATOR! YOU ARE NEVER ALONE! WE WILL WALK WITH YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY – 501-776-2566 or email.
